Car glass cleaner products — spray bottles and microfiber glass towels for streak-free windows

Car Glass Cleaner Guide — How to Get Streak-Free Windows and Add Rain Repellent

Streaky windows are one of the most frustrating detailing results — and one of the most avoidable. The right glass cleaner, the right technique, and a rain repellent coating turn your windshield from a visibility hazard into a clear, water-shedding surface that's easier to maintain.

Why Regular Glass Cleaners Don't Work on Car Windows

Household glass cleaners often contain ammonia, which damages window tint and dries out rubber seals over time. They also leave residue that causes streaking, especially on tinted windows. Always use an ammonia-free automotive glass cleaner.

Types of Automotive Glass Products

Standard Glass Cleaner

Removes fingerprints, dust, and light film. Ammonia-free formula safe for tinted windows. Use for regular maintenance cleaning.

Glass Stripper / Decontaminator

Removes bonded contamination — oil film, wax overspray, water spot minerals, and old rain repellent coatings. Essential prep step before applying a new rain repellent or ceramic coating to glass.

Coating Spray / Waterless Wash with Glass Treatment

Multi-function products that clean, add gloss, and provide light hydrophobic protection in one step. Convenient for quick maintenance between full details.

How to Clean Car Windows Without Streaks

  1. Work in shade — direct sunlight dries the cleaner before you can wipe it, causing streaks
  2. Use two microfiber cloths — one for applying, one for buffing dry
  3. Clean in two passes — first pass horizontal, second pass vertical. This way you can identify which direction any remaining streaks run.
  4. Don't forget the top edge — roll the window down slightly to clean the top inch that hides in the door frame
  5. Do interior glass last — interior glass gets a film from off-gassing plastics and vinyl; it needs more product and more passes

How to Apply Rain Repellent Coating

Rain repellent (hydrophobic) coatings cause water to bead and sheet off the windshield at speed, dramatically improving visibility in rain without wipers.

  1. Strip the glass first — use a glass stripper to remove all old coatings, wax, and oil film
  2. Clean thoroughly — follow with a standard glass cleaner
  3. Apply the coating — work in small sections, applying with an applicator pad
  4. Buff off haze — remove residue before it fully cures
  5. Allow to cure — avoid rain or washing for 24 hours

Dealing with Water Spots

Water spots are mineral deposits left when water evaporates. On glass, they appear as white haze or circular marks. A glass stripper removes light to moderate water spots. Severe etching may require a clay bar or light polishing compound on glass.

Interior Glass — The Overlooked Surface

Interior glass gets a greasy film from plastics, vinyl, and leather off-gassing — especially in new vehicles. This film causes glare at night and in low sun. Clean interior glass with a dedicated glass cleaner and a fresh microfiber cloth. Never use the same cloth you used on the exterior.
