Car Interior Cleaning Guide — How to Deep Clean Your Dashboard, Seats, Carpet, and Leather
Share
A clean interior isn't just about appearance — it prevents long-term degradation of materials. UV-exposed dashboards crack without conditioning. Neglected leather dries, cracks, and peels. Ground-in carpet dirt acts as an abrasive that wears fabric fibers down over years of use. A thorough interior detail 2–3 times per year, combined with regular maintenance between sessions, keeps the cabin in like-new condition and protects resale value. This guide covers the complete interior cleaning process from top to bottom.
Equipment and Products You Need
- Handheld vacuum with crevice tool and brush attachment: For seats, carpets, vents, and tight gaps. A dedicated car vacuum with strong suction handles embedded dirt that household vacuums miss.
- Interior all-purpose cleaner: pH-balanced formula safe for vinyl, plastic, fabric, and rubber. Avoid harsh degreasers that dry out and crack plastic trim.
- Detailing brush set: Soft bristle brushes in multiple sizes for air vents, seams, buttons, and textured surfaces. A stiff-bristle brush for carpet agitation.
- Microfiber towels: Multiple clean towels for wiping and buffing. Never reuse a towel that's picked up dirt without washing first.
- Upholstery/carpet cleaner: Foam or spray formulas for fabric seats and carpet stains. Enzyme-based cleaners work best for organic stains (food, drink, pet).
- Leather cleaner and conditioner: Two separate steps — cleaner removes surface dirt and oils, conditioner replenishes moisture to prevent cracking.
- Plastic/vinyl protectant: UV-blocking protectant for the dashboard, door panels, and trim to prevent fading and cracking.

Step-by-Step Interior Deep Clean
Step 1 — Remove and Vacuum
Remove all floor mats and shake them out. Vacuum the entire interior — seats, carpet, floor mats, trunk, and rear deck. Use the crevice tool for seat rail tracks, between seat cushions, door pockets, and console gaps. Use the brush attachment on textured surfaces to loosen embedded dirt before vacuuming it up. Do not skip this step — any surface cleaning on top of loose debris just moves it around.
Step 2 — Dashboard, Vents, and Trim
Spray interior cleaner onto a microfiber towel (never directly onto electronics or screens) and wipe the dashboard from center outward. Use a detailing brush to agitate vents, seams around buttons, and textured trim panels. A soft bristle brush picks up dust from vents without pushing it further in. Follow with a clean dry microfiber to remove residue. Apply UV protectant to prevent fading.
Step 3 — Fabric Seats and Carpet
Spray upholstery cleaner onto fabric seats and agitate with a medium-stiff brush in straight strokes. Allow the product to dwell for 1–2 minutes on stains. Blot with a clean microfiber — do not rub, which spreads the stain. For heavy soiling, a carpet extractor or wet/dry vacuum makes a dramatic difference in the result. Treat carpet the same way. Allow seats and carpet to dry fully — preferably with windows open or in a ventilated space — before closing the car.
Step 4 — Leather Seats
Clean leather with a dedicated leather cleaner and a soft brush or applicator. Work in sections, agitating gently to lift embedded oils and surface dirt from the pores. Wipe clean with a microfiber. Follow immediately with leather conditioner — apply and work in, then buff off any excess. Condition leather every 3–4 months minimum, and after any cleaning session. Never use interior all-purpose cleaner on leather — it strips natural oils and accelerates cracking.
Step 5 — Door Panels and Windows
Wipe door panels with interior cleaner, paying attention to the armrest (highest contact area) and door handle recess. Clean interior glass with an ammonia-free glass cleaner — ammonia damages tinted windows and dries out rubber seals. Use a dedicated glass towel for streak-free results. Wipe in straight lines rather than circular motions to avoid streaking.
Step 6 — Floor Mats
Clean rubber mats with an all-purpose cleaner and a stiff brush, then rinse and allow to dry before reinstalling. Fabric mats respond well to the same upholstery cleaner and brush method used on carpet. Reinstall only when fully dry.
Maintenance Between Deep Cleans
- Vacuum weekly or biweekly to prevent dirt from grinding into carpet fibers
- Wipe the dashboard with a damp microfiber monthly to prevent dust buildup that causes static and UV damage
- Address spills immediately — blot, don't rub, and treat with upholstery cleaner before the stain sets
- Keep a small interior detailing kit in the trunk for quick cleanups
