Car Trim & Molding Restoration Guide — How to Restore Faded Black Plastic Trim and Keep It Looking New
Share
Faded, chalky gray plastic trim is one of the most common cosmetic issues on vehicles more than a few years old. UV rays break down the surface of unpainted black plastic, stripping away the pigment and leaving a bleached-out gray appearance. The good news is that restoring black trim is one of the easiest and most dramatic DIY wins in car detailing — and it lasts far longer than it used to with modern ceramic-based products.
Why Plastic Trim Fades
Unpainted black plastic trim — door moldings, bumper covers, mirror housings, wheel arch trim, and body cladding — is made from polypropylene or ABS plastic. UV exposure breaks down the surface layer, causing the black pigment to oxidize and turn gray. Heat cycling from daily sun exposure accelerates the process. Once faded, the trim isn't damaged — it just needs the surface restored and protected from further UV degradation.
Types of Trim Restorers
Dressings (Oil-Based)
The most common and affordable type. A silicone or oil-based product that coats the surface and temporarily darkens faded trim. Results look great immediately but typically last 2–6 weeks before washing off or fading again. Best for regular maintenance rather than long-term restoration.
- Nanoskin Blue Dress Premium Dressing (16oz) is a sprayable dressing that works on trim, vinyl, rubber, and tires — versatile for full exterior detailing
- Griot's Garage Vinyl & Rubber Dressing (22oz) provides a clean, non-greasy finish on trim and rubber seals
Ceramic / Polymer Trim Restorers
A newer category that bonds to the plastic surface rather than just coating it. Creates a semi-permanent layer that restores the deep black color and provides UV protection. Lasts 6 months or more on properly prepared trim.
- Ceramic Plastic Restorer (single pack) uses a highly concentrated ceramic crystal formula — not a dressing, bonds to the surface for 6+ months of UV protection
- Ceramic Plastic Restorer (2x 50ml twin pack) — same formula, two bottles for full vehicle coverage or a second application
Step-by-Step Trim Restoration Process
- Step 1 — Clean thoroughly: Wash the trim with car wash soap to remove dirt and old dressing. Follow with isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber towel to strip any remaining silicone residue — this is critical for ceramic products to bond properly.
- Step 2 — Work in the shade: Apply restorer out of direct sunlight. Heat causes product to dry too fast and streak.
- Step 3 — Apply with a foam applicator: Apply a small amount to an applicator pad and work in straight strokes along the trim panel. Don't rub in circles — it creates uneven coverage.
- Step 4 — Wipe excess immediately: Any product that gets on painted surfaces or glass should be wiped off right away with a clean microfiber towel before it dries.
- Step 5 — Let cure: For ceramic products, allow 30–60 minutes before exposing to water. Avoid washing the car for 24 hours after application for best bonding.
- Step 6 — Second coat (optional): For heavily faded trim, a second thin coat after the first has cured deepens the black and extends durability.
Trim Types and What Works Best
- Unpainted black plastic cladding / body moldings: Best candidates for ceramic trim restorer. Dramatic before/after improvement.
- Rubber window seals and door seals: Use a dressing rather than ceramic restorer — rubber is flexible and needs a product that won't crack as the seal moves.
- Mirror housings: Ceramic restorer works well if unpainted plastic. Mask off glass before applying.
- Textured bumper covers: Work product into the texture with a soft brush for even coverage in recessed areas.
- Painted trim: Do not use trim restorer on painted surfaces — use a paint-safe detail spray or wax instead.
